VILLAGE FESTIVAL HELD IN 1988 REVIVES WILD SPORT

A SUFFOLK village stepped back in time at the weekend when it staged an ancient and infamous game which claimed lives more than 200 years ago.

The wild sport ot Camp was revived at the Bulmer Festival as part of 18^th Century recreations put on in aid of the village hall and church. Camp was said to have caused the death of nine men when it was originally played in Diss. The no-rules ball game was played in full competitive spirit on Church Meadow at Bulmer Tye by male villagers. The game, similar to a combination of rugby and football, permitted any number of participants, was attempted to be refereed by Peter Minter of Bulmer Brick & Tile Co.
