BULMER 1910

Ploughing Match—~—A well organized ploughing competition was successfully carried out on Monday last upon land kindly placed at the disposal of the committee by Mr. M. Blocker, of Goldingham Hall.

Twenty teams, entered by Mrs. Oates of Gestingthorpe Hall, Col. W. St. G. Burke, of Auberies, Mr. M. Blacker, Messrs. Courtnall and Parker, of Bulmer, Messrs. F. Rufile, King Downs, N. Coe and Malyon, of Gestingthorpe, competed.

The teams got to work about 12.30, and a stiff two hours' ploughing ensued. Prizes for the best teams on the field were kindly given by Miss Oates, and the donors of the ploughing prizes included: Mrs. Oates, Col. Burke, Messrs. Blacker, Bentall, Clerk, Dupont, Parker, Rufile, Ready and Turkentine. The judges were: Messrs. Page, of Bures, and Felgate of Wivenhoe, who showed much care and patience in performing their duties.

When the awards were decided, Col. Burke delivered the prizes to the winners, and addressing the assemblypointed out the benefits derived from these matches, both to employers and employed, in creating a wholesome emulation among the workers. He also noticed that several of the competitors were men well advanced in years, and urged the younger men to follow their good example. He also desired to say that the opinion of the judges was that the work had been done well by all, making it a difficult matter to come to a decision as regarded the prize winners.

The Colonel concluded by asking for a hearty vote of thanks to theorganizers of the meeting, to the judges and to the prize donors, which was agreed to with lusty cheers. At the suggestion of Mr. Courtnall, equally hearty cheers were given to Col. Burke for his kindness in attending and in supporting the project. Mr. Courtnall and Mr. Clarke also worked hard to bring the meeting to a successful issue.
